Vintage to the 1990s and early 2000s, the Vatican Library Collection of religious jewelry are highly collectible modern treasures based upon artifacts in the Vatican Library itself. This crucifix locket is based upon a authentic medieval reliquary. There were two iterations of this motif: one was gold tone with garnet-style red gems, and this one that is silver-tone with jet-black gems. Of the two, this silver tone is the most rare. In fact, in all of my years of collecting, this is the only one I've seen on the market. Condition is good, with minor spots of age-related tarnish. This locket also comes with the original chain, which is often missing. Crucifix opens and closes snugly with no loose joints. Size is quite large and long, and looks more like a pectoral cross than a necklace, though chain can be replaced easily. These are very difficult to find for sale, and this is the only silver tone I have personally ever seen.
